Our mission
The name ‘Glasgow 1770’ is a tribute to the founding date of the original ‘Glasgow Distillery Company’. Our city once boasted over 30 working whisky distilleries, and the original ‘Glasgow Distillery’, as they were known for a time, were one of the largest in the world until 1902 when they closed their doors. We take on their legacy with a mission to bring quality Glasgow-made spirits back to our city, and to the world.
A unique Signature Range
Glasgow 1770 Peated forms one-third of our 'Signature Range'. The Signature Range celebrates our three whisky creation styles:
1. Double distilled whisky using unpeated malted barley,
2. Triple distilled whisky using unpeated malted barley,
3. Double distilled whisky using peated malted barley.
This is our flagship smoky single malt showcasing the double distilled peated style of whisky we make for one-third of our production year.
Production Summary
To make Glasgow 1770 Peated, we combine the following three ingredients:
Barley: British malted barley that has been peated to 50PPM with peat from Aberdeenshire on the Scottish mainland.
Water: our local soft Scottish water sourced from Loch Katrine.
Yeast: A minimum 72 hours of fermentation within our washbacks using MG Pinnacle Distillers Yeast.
Distillation:
Two very slow distillations within our small copper pot stills; first within a 2,500 litre wash still, and then within a smaller 1,500 litre spirit still. These stills are run very slowly to produce a fruity and vibrant new make spirit.
When producing our peated double distilled style, we take a low cut point of 72% - 57% when we capture our hearts. This gives us a rich and flavour-packed new make spirit which has an oily and waxy tactility across the palate.
This new make is then reduced to 63.5% ABV before being filled into casks for maturation.
Maturation:
Glasgow 1770 Peated is double matured. We fill our new make spirit into 200 litre virgin American white oak barrels sourced from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky. We then finish this whisky for eight to twelve months within Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads which are 250 litres in capacity.
Glasgow 1770 Peated is a non-age statement product, which means we don’t place an age on the label. This is because the age of the whisky inside the bottle can change from batch-to-batch as we seek to provide a consistent flavour profile within the bottle, rather than a consistent age statement on the label. You can find the batch number of each bottling on the rear label near the barcode.
Bottling:
Glasgow 1770 Peated is consistently bottled at 46% ABV. This product is non-chill filtered, which means we’re keeping as much flavour and mouth-tactility within the bottle as possible. This bottle is also presented at natural colour, the dark colour all comes from the wood that we use to mature the whisky, first in virgin oak and then in sherry casks.
The resulting single malt is what we call our ‘rich & smoky’ style of whisky. Packed with notes of rich BBQ smoke, waxy orange peel, vibrant vanilla, and dark fruits with a sweet peat backbone that marries perfectly with the sherry cask influence.
