Small Batch Series
Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish
A limited edition release as part of our ‘Small Batch Series’. This is a six year old release that combines two peated casks, with three unpeated casks for a ‘lightly peated’ release. The whisky within these five selected casks was matured within first fill ex-bourbon for over three years before a 3 year and 4 month finish in French Cognac.
Bottled at 58% ABV, with 2250 bottles available, this is an elegant and orchard-fruit led single malt with notes of toffee, caramel, poached pear, and a lick of smoke.
The Small Batch Series
The Small Batch Series is a celebration of our cask experimentation. Every year we fill a wide range of interesting and unique cask types as we explore how our different whisky making styles (across unpeated, peated, and triple distilled single malt) interact with different cask types.
These limited edition releases are a revolving door of interesting cask maturations and finishes that truly demonstrate the breadth and depth of flavour-range we’re producing within our whisky releases. We like to think of these bottlings as a glimpse inside our tasting room as we learn ourselves how our different whisky creation styles react to different maturation treatments.
Production Summary
This is a six year old bottling, created by marrying five casks together, two of which held peated single malt, with three holding unpeated single malt (all double distilled). The whisky within these casks spent over three years within first fill ex-bourbon barrels before a long 3 years and 4 months finishing period within French Cognac casks.
Cognac is a French Brandy that has been made from grapes and distilled twice within copper pot stills before ageing within oak casks for a minimum of two years. The Cognac influence provides notes of fresh fruit, caramel, toffee and a slight nuttiness.
We originally used Cognac casks in 2022 as part of our first ‘Small Batch Series’ release which saw a Cognac finish given to a peated single malt which had been bottled at 56% ABV. In 2023, we released a triple distilled Cognac finished single malt presented at 52% ABV. This edition is the first time we have presented a Cognac-influenced release using a marriage of both peated and non-peated whiskies.
Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cognac Cask Finish, is a marriage of five casks: 16/852, 16/853 and 17/806 are casks that held unpeated single malt. 17/798 and 17/799 contained peated single malt. The spirit within each was initially matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels for a minimum of 3 years before a long finishing period within the Cognac barrique casks for 3 years and 4 months. The marriage of these casks and subsequent bottling occurred on the 9th of April 2024.
Bottled at 58% ABV with 2250 bottles available, this is a complex and characteristically fruity release with a balance of sweet smoke and rich vanilla. The bourbon influence adds layers of honeycomb, rich honey and vanilla ice cream, with the cognac contributing elements of dark fruit, a slight floral quality and copious amounts of poached pear and dried apples.
