Our mission
The name ‘Glasgow 1770’ is a tribute to the founding date of the original ‘Glasgow Distillery Company’. Our city once boasted over 30 working whisky distilleries, and the original ‘Glasgow Distillery’, as they were known for a time, were one of the largest in the world until 1902 when they closed their doors. We take on their legacy with a mission to bring quality Glasgow-made spirits back to our city, and to the world.
A unique Signature Range
Glasgow 1770 The Original forms one-third of our 'Signature Range'. The Signature Range celebrates our three whisky creation styles:
1. Double distilled whisky using unpeated malted barley,
2. Triple distilled whisky using unpeated malted barley,
3. Double distilled whisky using peated malted barley.
We’re one of only a handful of whisky distilleries that produce these three styles of new make spirit every year. We do this as it allows us to make a wide range of different styles of whisky
This is our flagship single malt showcasing the double distilled unpeated style of whisky we make for one-third of our production year.
Production Summary
Barley: unpeated malted barley sourced from around the UK.
Water: our local soft Scottish water sourced from Loch Katrine.
Yeast: A minimum 72 hours of fermentation within our washbacks using MG Pinnacle Distillers Yeast which gives us a bright and citrus-forward flavour profile.
Distillation:
Two very slow distillations within our small copper pot stills; first within a 2,500 litre wash still, and then within a smaller 1,500 litre spirit still. These stills are run very slowly to produce a dark fruit-forward new make spirit.
When producing our unpeated double distilled style, we take a medium cut point of 72% - 63% when we capture our hearts. This gives us a fruity new make spirit which has a waxy tactility across the palate. This new make is then reduced to 63.5% ABV before being filled into casks for maturation.
Maturation:
The Original is double matured. We fill our new make spirit into first fill ex-bourbon barrels sourced from various high quality bourbon producers in the USA. We then finish this whisky for around six months within fresh virgin American white oak barrels sourced from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky.
Glasgow 1770 The Original is a non-age statement product, which means we don’t place an age on the label. This is because the age of the whisky inside the bottle can change from batch-to-batch as we seek to provide a consistent flavour profile within the bottle, rather than a consistent age statement on the label. You can find the batch number of each bottling on the rear label near the barcode.
Bottling:
Glasgow 1770 The Original is consistently bottled at 46% ABV. This product is non-chill filtered, which means we’re keeping as much flavour and mouth-tactility within the bottle as possible. This bottle is also presented at natural colour, the amber gold colour all comes from the wood that we use to mature the whisky, first in first fill ex-bourbon and then in virgin oak casks.
The resulting single malt is what we call our ‘fresh & fruity’ style of whisky. Packed with notes of rich vanilla, dark fruits, orange zest, and a balanced black pepper spice, this is the single malt that started it all for us back in 2018 when we released our first ever whisky.
