Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish Batch 02 Lightly Peated
Thursday 11th July 2024Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish Batch 02 Lightly Peated, 58% ABV
This six year old release demonstrates our wonderful spirit and wood management by combining three unpeated Cognac casks with two peated casks for a ‘lightly peated’ release. Initially matured within first fill ex-bourbon casks, this characteristically fruity release has been finished for 3 years and 4 months within exceptional Cognac casks to offer notes of sweet smoke, rich honey, poached pear, dried apple and vanilla ice cream.
A limited-edition release as part of our Glasgow 1770 Small Batch Series; our ongoing set of bottlings that demonstrate the versatility of whisky we make here at our contemporary urban distillery. The Small Batch Series showcases our three whisky making styles across peated, unpeated, and triple distilled single malts with a wide range of new and exciting cask maturations.
The Glasgow 1770 Cognac Cask Finish release is a six year old bottling, created by marrying five casks together, two of which held our peated single malt, with three holding our unpeated single malt. The whisky within these casks spent over three years within first fill ex-bourbon barrels before an extended 3 year and 4 month secondary maturation period within Cognac casks.
Cognac is a French Brandy that has been made from grapes and distilled twice within copper pot stills before ageing within oak casks for a minimum of two years. The Cognac influence provides notes of fresh fruit, caramel, toffee and a slight nuttiness.
The year 2022 was the first time we used Cognac casks within our whisky production with a release using our peated single malt which was bottled at 56% ABV. In 2023, we released a triple distilled Cognac finished single malt presented at 52% ABV. This edition is the first time we’ve presented a Cognac-influenced release using a combination of both our un-peated and peated whiskies.
Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Cognac Cask Finish, is a marriage of five casks: 16/852, 16/853 and 17/806 and casks that have held unpeated single malt. 17/798 and 17/799 contain peated single malt. The spirit within each was initially matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels for a minimum of 3 years before a finishing period within the Cognac barrique casks for 3 years and 4 months. The marriage of these casks and subsequent bottling occurred on the 9th of April 2024.
Bottled at 58% ABV with 2250 bottles available, this release is a complex and characteristically fruity release with a balance of sweet smoke and rich vanilla. The bourbon influence adds layers of honeycomb, rich manuka honey and vanilla ice cream, with the Cognac contributing elements of dark fruit, a slight floral quality and copious amounts of poached pear and dried apples.
